Electric VS Manual Toothbrushes

Choosing a toothbrush can be a difficult task when faced with the vast array of products available. Manual and electric brushes have so many different sizes, styles, textures and added features making it difficult select.

When it comes to choosing between a manual or electric toothbrush, it is important to note that they are both EQUALLY effective in removing plaque and food stuck in the mouth but only if used correctly. This makes it a personal choice as to what you may prefer but no matter what choice is made the toothbrush must be kept in good condition.

The correct technique when brushing is achieved by holding the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle pointing towards the gum line with the bristles placed on both the teeth and gums. Moving the brush in small circular motions while gently sliding the brush under the gum will achieve optimum plaque control. Brushing must be done on the outside of the teeth, inside of the teeth and the biting surfaces of the teeth.

The bristles on any toothbrush wear and fray over time meaning we must keep them in excellent condition, replacing your toothbrush is recommended every 3 months (with the change of season). When choosing a brush size, a smaller head is better for access to the back teeth and hard to reach areas. Soft bristle brushes are also less abrasive on the gums, using a hard brush can often traumatize the tissues around the teeth and make them recede.

Sometimes, electric brushes are more suitable and recommended in the following cases for:

  • Children who have not developed the skills to effectively brush their teeth, in addition the cartoon characters and noises that the brush makes can encourage your child to make brushing an exciting experience.
  • Elderly who have arthritis or other disabilities may also find it easier to hold an electric toothbrush due to the bigger handle size

Always remember,

  • Brushing your teeth in the morning after breakfast and at night before bed is going to maximize the amount of plaque removed
  • Choosing a toothpaste that is fluoridated helps protect the outer enamel layer of the teeth
  • Flossing daily removes the food stuck in between your teeth is also essential, no matter which brush you use!
