It Starts With a Smile.

Is my baby teething?

What is teething?

Baby teeth grow underneath the gums. Teething occurs when these teeth are beginning to move and push their way up through the gums.

When does teething occur?

When your baby reaches 4-7 months of age, you may notice more frequent crying, more drooling, problems sleeping and general fussiness (ADA, 2014). Most babies will either refuse food, chew on toys, their fingers or anything they can get their hands on!

How can I soothe the soreness of teething?

Some tips include:

·       Distracting your baby with new toys, games or music which can deter them from concentrating on the soreness of the gums

·       Massaging the gums with gentle pressure, which can help release the force of the teeth

·       Use of a chilled washcloth or use of the back of a cold spoon to rub on the gums, which can also help with the pressure

·       Use of teething rings which are chilled in the fridge (not in the freezer) for your child to chew on – this can provide some relief

·       Use of a pacifier for your baby to suck on, which can also help settle your child and provide temporary relief.

It is important to note that you should not add any sugar, honey or jam into anything given to your baby as this can cause tooth decay. Medicines should not be added to your child’s food or bottle without consultation from a general practitioner or a dental professional.

Amber necklaces have also become popular in the last few years. Even though they can provide some relief, they may break, possibly leaving behind the beads as a choking hazard for your baby.

Symptoms such as diarrhoea and fever are not signs of teething -  these should be discussed with a healthcare professional to rule out any other illness.

At Concord Dental Practice, we recommend that all children should visit the dentist by the time they have their first tooth in their mouth. We will be able to check for normal development of their baby teeth as well as discuss how to best clean them. If you are concerned about your child teething, please do not hesitate to book an appointment to see one of our friendly practitioners for a check up or consultation.
