Tips to prevent decay in children

The friendly team at Concord Dental Practice endeavor to provide parents with all the necessary information so that they are able to minimise or prevent the occurrence of early childhood caries (ECC). Studies have shown that children who experience decay in their baby teeth are much more likely to suffer from dental decay in their adult teeth later in life.

The Australian Dental Association has published several guidelines to aid parents with the care of their children’s teeth.

Some handy tips include:

·       Cleaning your child’s teeth before bed time

·       Offering a bottle of plain water or a plain dummy if your child likes to suck on something while settling to sleep

·       Teaching your child to drink from a cup

·       Phasing out bottle feeding by the age of 12 months

·       Encouraging your child to drink water rather than fruit juice, which contains a lot of sugar

·       Diluting juices and ensuring they are only consumed during meal time

·       Taking your child to see the dentist at the age of one year: regular and early exposure to the dentist ensures that your child is comfortable with in the dental environment and are less likely to be anxious when they are present for future dental appointments.

At Concord Dental Practice, our friendly dental practitioners will take the time to gently examine your child’s teeth for dental decay, identify high-risk behaviour and habits and help provide the best care for their developing teeth.
