It Starts With a Smile.

Why are my teeth so sensitive?

What causes my teeth to be sensitive?

Teeth have an outside protective coating called enamel, this shields the inner layers of teeth known as the dentine and pulp. When the enamel of the teeth are worn away or damaged it leaves the inner layers exposed to the elements. Sensitive teeth can be caused by a variety of factors including tooth decay, broken teeth, worn fillings, grinding, gum disease and recession. During the winter months it is likely that even a cold frosty morning can cause this problem and during the summer months eating a lot of citrus fruit can have the same effect. Factors such as these all have weakened or worn away the protective layer of the teeth leaving the inner dentine exposed. When drinking very cold or hot beverages, people with sensitive teeth may feel a short sharp intense pain; this is because we all have small receptors in our teeth which send this signal through to the core of the tooth, giving us this type of pain.

Treatment options for sensitivity

Treatment may vary depending on the cause of the sensitivity in the mouth. It is always best to visit a dental professional to determine the cause and recommend products which may aid in reducing the amount of sensitivity.

• Using sensitive toothpaste can help repair and protect the inner layers of the teeth, providing a barrier to stop the signal from travelling through the tooth.

• Fluoride gels work in a similar way to provide a barrier to the inner dentine and are recommended after having your regular professional clean.

• Fillings and crowns can be used as an alternative when the sensitivity is severe and cannot be reduced by using a sensitive toothpaste alone

• Drinking room temperature water can help reduce the stimulation of the tooth as well as using room temperature water when brushing twice daily.

• Finally, brushing your teeth with a soft bristle brush to avoid traumatizing the gums and making the gums recede.

Generally there is a simple solution for tooth sensitivity whether it is just affecting one tooth or the whole mouth. At Concord Dental Practice we are able to help and advise you on treatment options and products which may help reduce or eliminate tooth sensitivity.
