Our preventive services aim to prevent 2 major diseases affecting your mouth: Dental Decay and Gum and Bone Disease.

The large majority of Australians are not familiar with the correct brushing and flossing techniques.  This means that although they may be brushing and flossing daily, they may still have decay and/or gum and bone disease present!  This is understandably a frustrating problem for many of people.  At Concord Dental Practice, we value and stress the importance of good home care routines and each patient is educated and shown, by our dentist and dental team, the most effective brushing and flossing techniques.

Regular Examinations and Gum and Bone Maintenance

Most of our patients visit routinely every 6 months for a dental check up and gum maintenace. Those patients who suffer from gum and bone disease require more frequent hygiene appointments, to ensure that no further bone loss can occur their teeth. Gum and bone disease is responsible for the majority of tooth loss in adults.  At Concord Dental Practice, we have a well organised recall maintenance program in place to remind our patients of when they are due to come in.  Depending on patient preference, we offer reminders by post, telephone, SMS or email.

We have found that the prevention of dental disease and maintenance of oral health are less costly and result in less dental emergencies.

Digital Radiographs

Depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, your dentist may recommend taking an x-ray to better diagnose dental disease. Digital radiography is available at Concord Dental Practice.  This means that images appear on the screen almost immediately and, more importantly, a remarkably reduced amount of radiation exposure to our patients (up to 10 times less than when compared with a standard film). Digital images are of of similar, if not better contrast when compared to conventional radiography.

Topical Fluoride Application

At Concord Dental Practice, we believe that prevention is better than cure.  Fluoride helps protect against tooth decay and can also repair weak areas that have the potential to form cavities on the surfaces of teeth.  Fluoride strengthens teeth and hence prevents acids (produced by the bacteria in plaque) from dissolving tooth structure.  Fluoride also allows teeth, which have been damaged by bacterial acid attacks, to repair and remineralise.  Fluoride cannot repair cavities which have already formed, however, it can reverse those areas affected by early demineralisation and prevent new cavities from forming.  If you have any further questions regarding the use of fluoride in preventive dentistry, please feel free to ask your dentist at your appointment.

Preventive Fissure Sealants

Pits and fissures are natural anatomical grooves found on the chewing surfaces of teeth.  The depth of these grooves vary from person to person.  If these grooves are deep, plaque and bacteria may trap inside these grooves and become very difficult to clean out. This bacterial trap may lead to the formation of decay.  To prevent this type of decay, these fissures can be sealed over with a white tooth coloured material,  which blocks out these grooves and hence prevent cavities.  The placement of fissure sealants is a simple and non-invasive procedure that has been shown to be highly effective in the prevention of tooth decay. Speak to your dentist at Concord Dental Practice for further information regarding sealants.
