It Starts With a Smile.

Why do I have a dry mouth?

Xerostomia, also known as dry mouth, is characterised by a decrease in saliva flow. It is a common condition that many individuals suffer, especially during stressful situations or when feeling slightly nervous.

Chronic xerostomia, however, can be quite unpleasant and may be a side effect of some medications, or, can indicate an underlying serious medical condition. In older adults, dry mouth may result from aging or hormonal changes. Dry mouth may be a symptom of a medical illness such as Sjrogens syndrome, or can result after radiation therapy to treat cancer in the head or neck region.

Some symptoms of dry mouth include:

·                Sticky/ dry or sore feeling in the mouth

·                Burning sensation on the tongue

·                Cracked lips or corners of the mouth

·                Bad breath

·                Difficulty eating dry or spicy foods

·                Difficulty speaking

·                Feeling thirsty

·                Waking up with a dry mouth at night

Saliva is important as it assists in chewing and swallowing, clears food from the mouth and helps in digestion. It also contains natural buffers that protect teeth from decay and prevents infections by controlling bacteria accumulation.

When the body is not producing enough saliva, this can lead to:

·                Increase plaque build up which can cause tooth decay and gum disease

·                Mouth ulcers developing more frequently

·                Poor nutrition due to chewing and swallowing difficulties

·                Development of fungal infections

·                Cracked lips

·                Coated and furry tongue

If you have a dry mouth, Concord Dental Practice recommends sipping on water throughout the day, which will moisten your mouth. There are also different Biotene products that moisten and neutralize the oral environment. GC dry mouth gel can also relieve symptoms by forming a protecting coating on the inside of the mouth.

It is important to also consider the use of a high fluoride toothpaste or Tooth Mousse Plus, to help strengthen your teeth against decay.

If you feel you are suffering from a dry mouth, please consult your dental professional to determine the cause and the right course of care for you.
